This book is dedicated to my wife and two daughters. Without their love and encouragement, neither the Korean edition nor this English edition would have been possible. – Taeho Jo

Foreword I still remember the moment coding stopped feeling like typing. I had asked an AI agent to build something I would normally have scoped as two days of work: read the ticket, explore the codebase, write the fix, run the tests, explain the change. I watched it do all of that in the time it took me to finish a coffee. My first reaction was not excitement. It was the quiet, slightly uncomfortable recognition that my profession had just changed shape, and that everything I believed about how software gets built needed to be re-examined. I have spent the years since living inside that change. At Avanai, the company I co-founded, we build and deploy AI agents for some of the largest enterprises in Europe and US; a large part of my work is standing in rooms full of experienced engineers, consultants, and domain experts, teaching them to work with these tools. I have given this training in corporate headquarters and at developer meetups, to teams of five and audiences of hundreds. And I can tell you what I see in every single room: the gap is no longer between people who can code and people who cannot. The gap is between people who know how to direct an AI coding agent and people who are still typing everything themselves. Claude Code sits at the center of that shift. It is, to my mind, the clearest expression yet of what agentic coding means: not autocomplete, not a chat window that produces snippets for you to paste, but a genuine collaborator that reads your project, forms a plan, uses tools, checks its own work, and iterates. The first time you watch it navigate an unfamiliar repository and come back with a working change, you understand that the unit of software work is no longer the line of code. It is the intention, clearly expressed. That is precisely why a book like this matters, and why Taeho Jo is the right person to write it. What impressed me about Taeho is the arc of his career: a senior software engineer at Macromedia Korea (now part of Adobe) who became a bioinformatics researcher and professor, someone who has used computation his whole life not as an end in itself but as an instrument for solving hard, real problems in medicine and science. He is also a proven teacher. His earlier book on deep learning became a standard textbook at dozens of universities because he has the rare ability to make a complex subject feel learnable without making it feel small. He brings both halves to this book: the engineer who respects the craft, and the scientist who cares about what the craft is for.

My advice for reading it is simple: do not read it. Work it. Keep Claude Code open in one window and this book in the other, and build something real as you go, however small. These tools reward practice over theory more than any technology I have ever taught, and the confidence you are looking for lives on the other side of your first twenty hands-on hours. This book is the most direct path I know to those hours being well spent. We are living through the greatest expansion of who gets to build software since the personal computer. It is a rare privilege to watch a door this large swing open. The book in your hands is an invitation to walk through it. Aemal Sayer AI Expert

Contributors About the author Taeho Jo is an Assistant Professor at the Indiana University School of Medicine, where he applies deep learning to Alzheimer's disease research, from discovering genetic variants to analyzing brain imaging and biomarkers. He created SWAT and a family of models including Deep-Block, TrUE-Net, and DuAL-Net. He holds a PhD in computational biology. He is also the developer of AlphaGenome MCP, an open-source tool that connects the AlphaGenome genomics model with Claude Code and Claude Desktop, allowing scientists to run complex analyses using plain language. Before entering academia, he worked as a software engineer at Macromedia Korea, now part of Adobe. His Deep Learning for Everyone has been a bestseller and university textbook in Korea for years, while his guide to Claude Code reached number one in the IT category at major bookstores across the country. Build with Claude Code is the English edition of that book. I would like to thank my family for their patience and support during the long hours I spent on this book. I am also grateful to Dr. Andrew J. Saykin for suggesting a rare-variant study with AlphaGenome, which grew into the MCP and, ultimately, this book. At Packt, I would like to thank Mohd Riyan Khan for setting the direction of the book for English- speaking readers and guiding it through every stage of publication; Divij Kotian for smoothly managing the project from start to finish; and Rounak Kulkarni for his careful reading and valuable feedback on the manuscript. My thanks also go to the entire Packt team for their support throughout the publication process. This book began its journey in Korea, and I am also deeply grateful to the team at Hanbit Media who made it possible: Min-Ah Park, who led the editorial team and supported this book from the start; Jeongah Seok, whose careful and dedicated editing shaped the Korean edition, Hwa Jeong Seong, whose marketing helped this book reach its readers, and Yesol Hong, who supported the English edition throughout the process.

Preface Not long ago, building software meant one thing: learning to code first. You could have a clear picture of what you wanted to build and still be stopped at the door because you did not speak the language of programming. AI-assisted development has changed that. With Claude Code, the conversation itself becomes the interface, and describing what you want is the first real step toward building it. This book is a hands-on guide to that way of working, often called vibe coding. You will not read about it in the abstract; you will build. A webpage in Chapter 1. A marketing portfolio in Chapter 2. A handwriting recognition program in Chapter 3, a to-do app in Chapter 4, and a quiz game in Chapter 5. By Chapter 6, you will be connecting AI models through APIs. In Chapter 7, you will be directing a team of AI agents, and in Chapter 8, you will deploy a database-backed service that anyone can open in a browser. Along the way you will learn the things that separate a lucky result from a repeatable one: writing prompts that get what you actually want, keeping AI honest about the content it generates, managing projects with CLAUDE.md and custom commands, and extending Claude Code with MCP servers, skills, and plugins. Along the way, you will learn what separates a lucky result from a repeatable one: writing prompts that get you what you actually want, verifying AI-generated content, managing projects with CLAUDE.md and custom commands, and extending Claude Code with MCP servers, skills, and plugins. The goal is not to turn you into a traditional programmer. It is to make you someone who can turn an idea into working software, with AI as a genuine development partner rather than just an assistant. Who this book is for Whether you're a beginner or an experienced professional, this book equips you with the skills to turn ideas into real, working software. It is ideal for product managers, marketers, researchers, educators, entrepreneurs, and anyone interested in AI-assisted development. Early-career software engineers will also find it valuable. If you've ever wanted to build applications but felt limited by your coding skills, this book provides a practical and accessible path to get started.
