xvii Forewords Priyanka Sharma Shweta Vohra’s book, Decoding Platform Engineering Patterns, arrives at a critical juncture in the evolution of technology platforms. The Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) has long recognized the transformative power of platforms and their role as cornerstones of cloud-native computing. Our community’s work to refine a maturity model in platform engineering is founded on the belief that platforms are essential to operational efficiency and scalability in the digital landscape. Look across the industry, and you'll see high-profile platform successes in Silicon Valley startups and established corporations. However, their lead seems difficult to follow: a surprisingly large number of platform projects fail to make it off the drawing board, and research suggests around 80%. The biggest issue is that a single agreed definition of a technology platform needs to be defined clearly. Before the cloud, the phrase defined a set of on-prem, complex enterprise-class systems that provided a software infrastructure for developers, operations, and users. The relational database was a prime example: it provided an essential set of valuable functions – storage and data processing, a development foundation for software engineers, and an API framework that third-party applications could plug into for additional functionality. One vendor controlled the code and the development roadmap. The scale, complexity, and rate of change in the cloud have challenged both this definition of a platform and the practice of its development. A fresh understanding and approach are required. The CNCF has stepped in to help. We define a platform as a collection of capabilities, documentation, and tools that support the development, deployment, operation, and management of products and services. It should let organizations deliver applications and services faster and more reliably. Three characteristics define the modern platform.

xviii First, innovation comes not from one vendor but through community-driven open source, attracting those interested in making change, finding answers, and furthering innovation. Projects generate feedback and updates at a rapid pace. The stronger the output, the more participants will be attracted, meaning technologies will become robust and sustainable. Next, the concept of experience is a priority. Competition is intense in digital services, and customers – developers, users, or those outside your organization – have heightened expectations. Yet the cloud is a complex environment of transactions, microservices, and scale. Building a customer-first platform means organizing the components to deliver a streamlined, cohesive, and integrated experience. Finally, we must raise our game on design, build, and work to a new platform engineering standard. As systems, infrastructure, and services mature, those designing and building platforms can harvest best practices and develop resources such as templates, meaning the platform can be scaled, operated, and secured quickly and efficiently. xxi Introduction Introduction: Why Platforms Fail and Why This Book Exists “Everywhere there can be a platform; there will be a platform.” —MIT Initiative on the Digital Economy This prediction has not just come true1; it has become the very fabric of our modern technological landscape. Today, almost every business either leverages technology platforms or has evolved into a platform company itself. Technology platforms are the engines of innovation, crafted to enhance user experiences while propelling and maximizing business success. The leading tech giants such as Meta (Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp), Apple, Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Netflix, and Tesla are prime examples of thriving digital ecosystems. They have reshaped industries and redefined consumer expectations across the world. Yet despite their ubiquity, the concept of “platform” has become increasingly muddled. The term is now used so broadly that its true meaning often gets lost amid technological jargon and marketing hype. Studies show that despite the revolutionary impact of digital platforms, over 80% of them fail.2 Why Platforms Fail Why do so many platforms fail despite all the intelligence, investment, and innovation behind them? xxii • Misaligned incentives and ownership: Teams optimize for delivery, not sustained value. • Over-engineering and under-measuring: Building complex systems without clear success metrics. • Neglecting the user experience: Assuming developers or customers will simply adapt. • Scaling too early or too narrowly: Expanding without foundational clarity or ecosystem maturity. Why This Book Exists Given this growing ambiguity around what platforms truly are, it is crucial to draw from lived experience to clarify their role and impact. My journey in the software and IT industry, spanning over two decades, has provided insights from serving more than fifty customers across telecom, banking, automotive, healthcare, travel, and government. Through these experiences, I have witnessed the evolution of platforms firsthand, seeing their rise, reinvention, and often failure due to not leveraging how humans build, adopt, and understand scale. My involvement with technology platforms began unexpectedly in 2003–2004 while developing some of the earliest web hosting solutions. Coding in Perl and Python, integrating Linux platforms, and creating templated solutions laid the groundwork for my lifelong focus on technology platforms. Those early days were marked by challenges in infrastructure and the infancy of automated builds, but they also set the stage for modern digital experiences. Over time, I transitioned to more complex projects, from developing features for automated driving tractors in Australia to designing enterprise integrations across automotive, defense, IoT, and healthcare ecosystems. In the past decade, I have witnessed the convergence of cloud infrastructure, AI/ML, and platform thinking, fundamentally transforming how we design, operate, and scale technology. InTroduCTIon
