Exam Structure and Duration The AZ-900 exam typically includes 40–60 questions and lasts about 45 minutes. You can expect a mix of multiple-choice, drag-and-drop, and scenario-based questions. There are no prerequisites for the AZ-900 Azure Fundamentals exam, and the exam is available in multiple languages. The passing score is 700 out of 1000. Chapter 1. Introduction to Cloud Computing Welcome to the first chapter of the Azure Fundamentals (AZ-900) Study Guide! In this chapter, you’ll be introduced to the foundational ideas behind cloud computing—what it is, why it matters, and how it transforms traditional IT. TIP If you’re already familiar with these basics, feel free to skip ahead to Part II, beginning with Chapter 6. The objective of this chapter is to help you build a strong base for everything that follows. What Is Cloud Computing? At its core, cloud computing is the delivery of computing services, including servers, storage, databases, networking, security, monitoring, and analytics. These services are hosted in secure, enterprise-grade datacenters managed by cloud providers such as Microsoft Azure (the focus of this study guide). Other popular cloud service providers include Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Google Cloud Platform (GCP). One of the greatest advantages of the cloud is its enterprise-level security. Cloud providers, such as Microsoft Azure, invest billions of dollars into multilayered defenses, global threat intelligence, compliance frameworks, and continuous monitoring. This is far beyond what most organizations could implement on their own. For many businesses, this level of protection

would be prohibitively expensive to build or maintain in a traditional on- premises setup. You’ll learn more about security in Chapter 12. Let’s start our journey into cloud computing with the two foundational building blocks of any cloud environment: compute and storage. Understanding Compute Power The first foundational building block of any cloud environment is compute. Compute power refers to the processing capability of a system (provided by elements such as its CPU cores, memory [RAM], GPU options, and network throughput) which together determine how efficiently workloads run. Suppose you’re working in an on-premises environment and your server has 8 GB of RAM. You discover that it’s not enough to handle a new workload, so you must purchase and install additional physical memory. This upgrade process often involves downtime, shipping delays, and capital expense—a familiar pain point for anyone who’s managed physical infrastructure. By contrast, cloud computing lets you adjust compute power on demand. If your application needs more resources, you can scale up within minutes. When demand drops, you scale down to save costs. You only pay for what you actually use. In many cases, scaling can even be automated through autoscaling. There are two main types of scaling: Vertical scaling (scale up/down) Increasing or decreasing the size of an existing resource, such as by upgrading a 2-core virtual machine (VM) to 4 cores Horizontal scaling (scale out/in)

Adding or removing instances, such as by deploying additional VMs behind a load balancer to handle more web traffic Together, these capabilities ensure high availability and resilience so your applications remain responsive even as workloads fluctuate. You’ll explore this concept further in Chapter 2. Storage Capabilities Explained Storage is another foundational building block of any cloud environment. Instead of relying on physical hard drives, cloud storage lets you store, access, and manage data through distributed, highly available systems. In a traditional on-premises setup, if your server has a 500 GB hard drive and it becomes full, you must buy additional hardware, install it, and ensure that it’s backed up and protected. Cloud storage removes these limitations. For example, Azure provides virtually unlimited capacity, durability, and built-in redundancy without requiring you to manage physical devices. Table 1-1 introduces several Azure storage types you may encounter on the AZ-900 exam. As you can see, each storage type supports different kinds of data and different use case requirements.

To store user profiles and application metadata at scale Azure also offers multiple storage access tiers (such as Hot, Cool, Cold, and Archive) to help balance cost and performance based on how often data is accessed. Additionally, Azure automatically replicates your data to protect against hardware failures and ensure high availability. You’ll learn more about Azure storage services (including Blob, Files, Queue, and Table storage) in Chapter 11.
