xv About the Author Andre Milchman, a hands-on enterprise and software architect, boasts a diverse professional background. His journey began in civil engineering, where he honed his skills as a construction engineer in the dynamic oil and gas industry. Like many of his peers in the 1990s, Andre transitioned into the burgeoning field of computer science, earning a degree that paved the way for his certification as a Sun Certified Enterprise Architect. In Canada, Andre has made significant contributions as a software professional and technology researcher. His passion lies in systems thinking, sociotechnical systems architecture, advanced analytics, and artificial intelligence, which is evident in his written works, such as Enterprise Architecture Reimagined: A Concise Guide to Constructing an Artificially Intelligent Enterprise, The Triadic Evolution: Reimagine Tomorrow’s Sociotechnical World, and AI Safety and Security: Architectural Context, Perspectives, and Insights. Andre’s collaborative spirit shines through in his coauthored works with Noah Fang, Prescriptive Analytics: A Short Introduction to Counterintuitive Intelligence and The Transformable Enterprise: Enterprise Architecture in a New Key. xvii Preface The author thanks a fictional government agency for its phantom funding, a university that graciously granted a sabbatical despite no prior affiliation, and a reviewer on Amazon for coining a new term of criticism. Gratitude extends to the City Hall of Evolveburgh, the mayor of the city, and some secretive intellectual society. The journey to writing this book began with a humble idea—unit oriented architecture—shared on my website, method.org. Like a small acorn growing into a mighty oak, that idea sprouted into my first book, Enterprise Architecture Reimagined: A Concise Guide to Constructing an Artificially Intelligent Enterprise. This debut attempted to mend the flaws of previous methods, much like duct tape on a leaky spaceship. The catalyst for the second book, Prescriptive Analytics: A Short Introduction to Counterintuitive Intelligence, cowritten with Noah Fang, was a delightfully scathing one-star review on Amazon by Richard Foster. His review, titled “nonsensense,” stated, “This book has words, sentences, and diagrams. There is no value for the material beyond that.” I was truly inspired by his invention of the new word “nonsensense” to describe my work. This critique propelled us to unravel the mysteries of designing a prescriptive analytics system. We modeled situations, conjured actionable alternatives to transform possibilities into options, and employed evolutionary algorithms to turn those options into solutions. Our grand unveiling at The Summit for Asset Management in Toronto in 2018 was, from my perspective, an unequivocal hit—thanks to the organizers for giving us a platform to sound smarter than we probably are. A heartfelt thank you goes to the fictional Department of Offence of Aitopia for a research grant that fueled these early works. The grant was as real

xviii as my ability to juggle flaming torches while riding a unicycle. The research inspired The Transformable Enterprise: Enterprise Architecture in a New Key, coauthored with Noah. This book illuminated the clandestine proceedings of the Epoch Making Event, later rebranded as the Epoch Busting Event of the New Key Club—one of the world’s most secretive intellectual societies. Figure 1. Evolveburgh’s transparency initiative rebranded the Department of Defense to the “Department of Offence”—straight to the point. The Library became the “Repository of Already Thought Thoughts,” and the Zoo is now the “Enclosure of Reluctant Animal Envoys.” Garbage trucks roll out as “Wagons of Past Decisions,” and introverts sport “Sporadic Sociability” badges. Evolveburgh, now the City of Silent Introspectors, stands as a testament to the unspoken depth behind every candid word, a sanctuary where wisdom and authenticity are found in the quiet spaces between the lines In a twist of fate, the University of Evolveburgh (the second capital of Aitopia) granted me a study leave, even though I never actually worked there. Perhaps they simply wanted to ensure I never showed up! This fortunate turn of events allowed me the time to travel, write, and deeply reflect on the complexities of architecting sociotechnical systems. During this unexpected year of intellectual exploration, I penned The Triadic Evolution: Reimagine Tomorrow’s Sociotechnical World. This book marks a PrefaCe

xix pivotal shift in our understanding of evolution, explaining how biological evolution, evolution by organization, and evolution by extension converge to empower us to actively shape our destiny. By intertwining these three dimensions—biological evolution, where natural forces shape life; evolution by organization, where structured systems drive progress; and evolution by extension, where technological advancements extend our capabilities—we can actively architect our evolutionary path. Figure 2. Evolveburgh stands as an unexpected leader in Aitopia’s capital race, propelled by a hundred years of unresolved naming debates. The yet-to-be-named first capital remains unbuilt, but its planners, motivated by the council’s lethargic choices, are already drafting for the next Ice Age, featuring high-tech igloos and yeti robots. xx In December 2023, I ambitiously applied for one of 50 OpenAI Superalignment Fast Grants. Despite not being among the lucky 50 out of about 2700 applicants, the experience inspired my latest book, AI Safety and Security: Architectural Context, Perspectives, and Insights, published this year. It’s a detailed exploration of aligning and securing superhuman AI systems, perfect for those sleepless nights when you’re pondering the future of humanity. This book, Unit Oriented Enterprise Architecture, was sponsored by Evolveburgh City Hall under the condition that I include pictures illustrating the fascinating and enigmatic life of Evolveburgh. As one of the most technologically advanced cities in the world and the only one reputed to have had contacts with extraterrestrial beings, Evolveburgh offers a unique backdrop for this work. xxiii Introduction Before we “Haussmannize” our enterprise architecture, let’s remember that sometimes, the best renovations start not with a blueprint, but a bang. We need to demolish the concept of enterprise architecture as we know it. It’s a bold statement, but history teaches us that sometimes the old must be razed to make way for the new. This was dramatically exemplified by Napoleon III in the mid-19th century when he envisioned a modernized Paris. To bring this vision to life, he enlisted Baron Haussmann, known as the “artist of demolition,” who used literal cannons to clear entire neighborhoods, paving the way for broad boulevards and a modern cityscape. Napoleon III’s directive was clear: replace the congested and disease-prone medieval Paris with a structured, efficient, and aesthetically appealing urban environment. Under Napoleon’s direction, Haussmann’s radical methods and his commitment to transformation turned Paris into a model of modernity replete with wide avenues that improved traffic flow, beautiful buildings that uplifted the city’s image, and a vastly improved water and sewage system that addressed critical public health needs. This transformation, though controversial, was fundamentally about tearing down to rebuild better, stronger, and more suitably for the new ages. Today, we face a paradox. Our task is to dismantle deeply entrenched systems and processes in enterprise architecture—systems not made of bricks and mortar, but of code and convention.
